What is the best Air Purifier to use for Cigarette Smoke?

I have just moved into a new place and found out that the Basement tenants smoke. I have filters and bounce sheets in all of the vents and blankets under the doors. My house still stinks like smoke. I have spoken with my landlords who have informed me that the tenants in the basement do smoke and that they would go halfers with me on an Air Purifier to help.

What is the best Air Purifier/Filter to clean the air of Cigarette Smoke?

The previous answer is right in that ideally you wouldn’t have to deal with such an inconsiderate neighbor. But since you live in the real world, you’re going to need a purifier that specifically designed for tobacco smoke, that is, one that has a large carbon filter. Carbon filters in purifiers are designed to adsorb (not absorb, but basically the same thing) gases and odors, and specific filters are intended for use in high smoke areas.

Nothing will be 100% effective but depending on the size of your apartment and the placement of the purifier, it can make a big difference.

what to do for smoke smell from air purifier we bought second hand?

We bought a “hardly used” honeywell 1700 air purifier for my allergies but apparently when my husband went to pick it up the couple was a heavily smoking one.So even if they havent “used it in that past 2 years as they moved shortly after to a place where they didnt need one” the machine must have been stuffed with the smoke. Anyways as soon as we started running it it started to blow cigarette smell. My husband washed the carbon prefilter and we are planning to vacuum the heap filter. But the smell seems to be coming from the engine part where it does the blowing.there is no way we can clean this part. What are we supposed to do?Would the smoke smell go away after runing it for a while or will stay like that forever. Does the smell mean it also contains all the carcinogens associated with the cigarette (third hand smoking).I am very disappinted.Any suggestions?

ometnico answers:

Vacuuming the HEPA will not remove the smoke residue and since it is a Honeywell, it is very likely that the internal components are covered with the tar and smoke residue. This means that if you can’t clean those parts, they will continue to gas out until all of the residue has been exhausted into your breathing space. The Honeywells are not high quality and are prone to filter bypass, that means that the air that it is supposed to be cleaning is going right around the filter. This bypass is what has allowed the smoke and its ingredients to get into the internals of the machine.

If you want the best air purifier on the market and a one time purchase, take a look at the Sun Pure SP-20C at http://www.allergy-relief-air-purifier.com/portable-air-purifiers.html. This is a high quality air purifier that will give you relief of your symptoms and actually improve your indoor quality throughout your home as it is capable of cleaning up to 2,000 sq ft. This machine does not disappoint. Good luck!!

Owning and/or working in a salon for hair and nails can make clients look and feel beautiful. Unfortunately, many of the products that have become industry standards cause your shop to smell awful and can cause acute and long term health problems.

Using an air purifier to keep the air clean is just as important as having clean towels, brushes and combs, and the right shades of hair color and nail polish. Here are 5 features an air cleaner needs to have to be effective.

Enhanced Carbon Filter—The fumes that evaporate from salon products such as perms, hair dye, nail polish, and polish remover are often volatile organic chemicals. Even a small amount in the air can cause eyes to water, throats to burn, dizziness and even nausea.

And while carbon is well known for its ability to remove gaseous chemicals, VOC compounds are heavy duty and even carbon needs help to eliminate them effectively. That’s why it is important that that activated carbon zeolite be enhanced with potassium iodide. This increases the carbon’s ability to properly eliminate salon fumes.

Split Capacitor Motor—The best defense is a good offense. And having a cleaner with a motor that will allow it to run 24 hours a day means that fumes are never allowed to reach a level that would cause the acute symptoms that can make clients and staff so uncomfortable and sometimes cause clients to resort to using gas masks.

This type of motor allows filtration to be safe, effective, and continuous whether you are there or not. And being able to have the air filtered at night means you get to walk into a salon that smells fresh and clean every morning.

Steel Construction—Having a cleaner with a motor that runs all the time will generate heat. If your cleaner is made of plastic, changes are the heat from the motor will cause the plastic to give off noxious odors. This is obviously not something you want to happen, and you certainly don’t want to pay for a cleaner that sends more fumes into the air. Selecting a purifier that is made of steel is an easy and effective fix to the problem.

Multiple Filtration Speeds—During peak times, if there a multiple stylists and technicians offering procedures that are smelly, the air quality can go downhill fast. A unit that allows you to control the rate at which the air is cleaned allows you to stay ahead of the problem.

Low, medium, and high settings give you the most control over how your air smells. And when things are less busy, you can save money and energy by being able to turn the filtrations speed back to low.

Wheels—Most air cleaners work by cleaning the air that is closest to them first, sending the clean air out into the space and pulling in more air. Having a purifier that has wheels means you can roll the cleaner closer to a stylist or an area that is producing the most fumes.

Heavy heavy-duty wheels that can roll easily over a number of surfaces means you are more able to contain the fumes and prevent them from affecting everyone in the salon.

Providing clean air for those in your salon is one of the most important services you can offer. Fresh air makes everyone feel better, and feel better about your salon.

Questions about HVAC!?

I need someone is knowledgeable about HVAC. Since, when a contractor suggest something for the HVAC,I can’t tell if they are being helpful or trying to make more money off of me and I will lose in the end.

1.I was wondering about getting a new air cleaner/purifier since my dad is using a standard air filter, but my mom and me have allergies, but my dad tend to forget things like to change the air filter every month or so…

So,is it a good choice for me to get the Infinity Air Purifier and it claim that I need no cleaning at all,but I need your guys’ insight?

Here is the link:Air Cleaners – Carrier

How about Carrier humidifiers, ventilators, and UV lamps? Review(s)?

2.As a homeowner, are you suppose to have the original copy of the permit or no?

When do you know that you need to get a permit?

3.What do you guys mean that the brands of furnace are the same,as in the same company build different brands or the sneaky contractor put a sticker on it and call it that?

4.So,if a labor warranty is 5 years, then the company that built the furnace or whatever will pay the contractor for the labor, correct?

ometnico answers:

1.The air purifier will need replacement of the filter media but can last a year due to it’s large surface area.
UV lights will need replacement bulbs every year or two so you have to keep that in mind.
For someone with allergies I think it’s a good choice.

2.The permit could be pulled by the homeowner or the contractor, it will depend on where you live.

3.Yes, the same manufacturer can make several different brands and may look similar as they may come from the same plant but the model number on the furnace nameplate will be for that brand. Make sure they quote you model numbers.

4.The standard first year labor warranty is provided by the installing company and is not reimbursed by the furnace manufacturer unless it can be confirmed that it is a factory defect.
Extended warranties can be purchased that cover labor and in that case the dealer must submit a warranty claim to get reimbursed.

It can seem complicated. Each Air purifier comes with a Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR), which is a measure of the amount of particle-free air being delivered into the room. CADR rating applies to the highest fan setting of each unit. CADR is created as a measure to compare the effectiveness of air purifiers. The higher the CADR, the larger the room that can be effectively cleaned. The rule of thumb is CADR x 1.5 = sq. Ft. Room size. So with a CADR of 55 on the highest setting it can clean a room of 55 x 1.5 sq. Ft., or about 85 sq. Ft.

Re: Ionic Breeze s1397?

I have a Sharper Image Ionic Breeze Model S1397 Air purifier. I have used it for years and like it but recently was told that it is not safe to use because it gives off unsafe ozones. I have checked the internet and found that people are actually still selling it on EBAY. Also, I have read both good and bad reviews about it. I tried to contact Sharper Image but apparently the people who owned the company went bankrupt years ago and the new owners are telling me that they don’t have any info on it now. Does anyone out there know anything about this model and whether or not I should toss it? Thanks in advance

ometnico answers:

If you like it and keep it clean, keep using it until it fails.

Its ozone production is largely a function of how clean you keep it… Cleaner is less ozone.

Newer models have added catalytic filters to reduce ozone concentrations. You could pass the outlet air stream through activated carbon (pet stores sell it for aquarium filter) to reduce ozone (and also adsorb odors).

If you suffer from allergies, chronic or seasonal, the right air purifier can be your ticket to relief. Knowing which features are the most important to have can save you from making a mistake that you can’t recover from. Here are 5 of the biggest mistakes to avoid when choosing an air purifier for your allergies.

Buying The Wrong Size—The technical specifications online or a hard copy of the product manual will let you know how many square feet the unit is designed to clean. It is important to accurately measure your home so that you can match the unit’s capacity to the space you have. Choosing a cleaner that cannot clean the amount of less space that you have is a recipe for disaster.

Instead match the size of the space that you have with a cleaner that can clean that amount of space or even more square footage than you have. Oversizing rather than under sizing will give you a better chance of reducing the level of pollutants. And a lower level of irritants can mean a decrease in the number and severity of allergy flare ups.

Cheap Cleaner—You know the old saying “you get what you pay for”, well it’s true. A low cost cleaner usually means that there is no filter or only one filter. And the fewer filters a cleaner has the less effective it will be. A cheaper cleaner can also have a motor that is not able to provide continuous filtration. Pollutants don’t take a break and neither should cleaner.

Instead choose a cleaner with multiple filters. The more filters the longer it will be before a filter change is needed. Fewer filter changes mean it will ultimately cost less to filter your air.

High Maintenance—Often you don’t have a choice about high maintenance people in your life, but paying money for a cleaner that needs constant attention doesn’t seem like a smart move. Many times maintenance can mean interruption in filtration which allows pollutants to build to a level that can cause symptoms that range from annoying to debilitating.

To avoid frequent interruptions in filtration, look for a filter that requires little maintenance and one that does not require you to go inside the unit or turn off while performing maintenance. The best units at most may require an occasional vacuuming on the outside and usually have filters that can last for 5 years or more.

No Warranty—This should be a huge red flag. If the manufacturer won’t stand behind the unit it shouldn’t come as a surprise when it doesn’t last. 6 month and one year warranties are better than nothing, but just barely.

Look for a purifier that not only has a warranty on the purifier, but pro-rated filter warranty as well. This kind of backing from the maker is a clear vote of confidence in the quality and longevity. Chances are you’ll never need to cash in on either one.

Limited Operation—If you’re not very careful; you could wind up with a cleaner that can only be run for a certain number of hours a day. Sometimes this is because running it continuously would cause a safety issue like overheating.

A split capacitor motor is essential if a cleaner is to be effective at consistently keeping allergen levels low. This type of motor can run 24 hours a day every day without taking a break. This feature can help insure that airborne irritants stay low and your quality of life remains high every day.

Which of these air purifiers are good for me?

I’m in the market for an air purifier and I’m not sure which kind I should get. I’ve taken a look at some, and I’m not sure which would fit my needs. I first took a look at some HEPA filters, since I know they filter 99.99% of air particulates. But I also knew that they’re usually loud, you have to change the $100 filter every other month and they take up a lot of energy. I saw a Kenmore Envirosense filter and though it looked nice, but still; the hassle with expensive filters and energy. Before I go on, I should say the men in my family (My dad, brother and me) all have asthma, so we need something that would help with that. We also took a look at some models over at Brookstone. We found a Pure-Ion Advanced Air Purifier. The thing was ugly, but it worked, saying you would have 80% cleaner air in about 8 minutes. This isn’t a HEPA filter, but it had a fan. They say this one helps with asthma, but I’m not sure. Another one from Brookstone was the Blueair HEPA filter, one that was more
impressive than the Pure-Ion. This one came in a tabletop form, but still, the filters and the whopping price tag of $400.
Anyways, after that, we went to the Oreck store because we heard about some kinda amazing deal on TV, letting us try an Oreck Air purifier, vacuum, and a refrigerator purifier. one of Oreck’s points was “You can’t clean the air if you can’t move it”, which made perfect sense to me, but there was one trick up my sleeve that made me think otherwise. Anyways, the Oreck one was impressive, requireing no filters and taking up much less noise and space and eating less eletricity than HEPA filters. However, when compared other filters like this one, it ranked the lowest, but I’ve never tried it, so I really wouldn’t know. After that, came our last stop which would be the trick up my sleeve. We went into The Sharper Image immediately seeing their crown acheivement, the Ionic Breeze Quadra, the purifier I had heard about long before the other filters, so I had somewhat of a bias towards it. Like many other purifiers, these use ions and electrons and stuff like that to clean the air
And it game in multiple models, the Tabletop version, the MIDI, the Quadra, the GP, and the Hybrid GP, which is some huge powerful air purifier. The GP caught my eye because It offered deep cleaning without an over-the-top price tag. These however, don’t use fans. So I had no clue how it was cleaning all the air. An explanation from you guys would be helpful. If you guys have owned or used these fiulters, please tell me and how you liked them. Especially if it help with your asthma.

You prefer not to get the sharper image but in my opinion it’s the only way to go. I have had two of them running in my house now for a couple years and love the way they perform and the ease of cleaning. I have the ones with the uv lamp in them. I wouldn’t recommend any model with a fan though. You have to deal with moving parts that could fail prematurely.

What is a good air purifier for a cubicle?

My fiance works for a large airplane manufacturing company and is often miserable because of his cube conditions. He is looking for some kind of fan or ionizer that is very small (like desk size), quiet, and preferably runs off of the computer’s power. He isn’t allowed to take in anything the size of a regular fan (like a tower fan) and would need something super small. I saw the Day-Timer Ionic Air Flow Fan with Clock on Amazon.com, but after searching the internet, I couldn’t find any actual reviews of the product. Has anyone used anything that they would recommend?

ometnico answers:

Kim: Don’t let him waste his hard earned money on that piece of junk. Besides, if the air quality is poor, an ionizer really won’t work as they don’t get rid of particles, they cause them to become heavy and fall. Since they produce ozone as a byproduct, it is not a good idea to run one in such a small area as a cubicle. The problem with which he is faced is that in order to clean the air, you have to be able to move it…and in order to move it you have to have a pretty good motor and fan. Even for a small area you want something that moves at least 200 CFM, especially if the area has high ceilings. Remember when cleaning air, you are cleaning cubic feet and not square feet (you are cleaning the volume of air, not just the air on the surface of the floor)
I would recommend the small Austin Air HealthMate Junior, because it will move enough air to clean a cubicle…but it won’t fit on the desk top. But…..anything that fits on the desk top isn’t going to work…and if it doesn’t work then it has no value…no matter how much or how little it costs!
I am including a link to an article that will tell you how to evaluate the many kinds of filters out there, how the select the right one based on the size of the area (it even includes the formula for the calculation) and what it is you want to remove. I will also put a link for the HealthMate Junior in case you want to check it out. I am sure that if he talks to his HR department and has a note from the doc, the type or size of machine will not be an issue….but he should talk to HR.
